We don't read and write poetry because it's cute. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race. And the human race is filled with passion. And medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for. To quote from Whitman, "O me! O life!... of the questions of these recurring; of the endless trains of the faithless... of cities filled with the foolish; what good amid these, O me, O life?" Answer. That you are here - that life exists, and identity; that the powerful play goes on and you may contribute a verse. That the powerful play *goes on* and you may contribute a verse. What will your verse be?During literature fest, Dr Dennis Yeo's keynote speech was accompanied by a powerpoint presentation that included many many quotes from DPS so I decided to catch the 1989 film about three weeks back. I watched the first half on my own one night until I was too tired to keep up. The second half was enjoyed with chong ray a few days later since he had it as his film assignment for the week.
- John Keating (Dead Poets Society)
I remember that when Mr Keating told the class the quote above, I decided that would be my favourite quote of the movie.
It's the only Robin Williams film I've watched.
Nights are becoming an increasing struggle for me but...it's never a good time to give up.
