Be prepared for a long-ass post.
First let me introduce gyf since when i tell people i was having the event outside school they were like "wts is gyf" so... as the title of the post suggest, it stands for global youth forum and it is an event held by global youth congress international (gyci). The founder of gyci (mr chu) is also the owner of the centre i go to for math tuition and that's how i got to know of it and i was approached to be a facilitator. After like one day of thinking i decided to go for it (:
I started going for meetings and training sessions late june/early july at victoria school which is at the forbidden marine parade area (an hour and a half bus ride) and the actual event was from 22nd - 25th august at the same place
Day 1
Started at 0730 at the auditorium. Got briefed, were given our groupings and then started prepping for the delegates to arrive. Was in the blazer-attire and was ushering delegates up the stairs for one and a half hours hahaha omg. I almost died from standing in court shoes, how do women do this?! I texted my facil partner sharif on what was going on in the audi and he said "talking to them" (this turned out to be completely false)
Opening ceremony included several speeches and the key-note address on globalization by prof moeller and i almost fell asleep ): then we headed for lunch where i got to know the names of my delegates, got them to change and eat and then we headed for cluster discussion! Three questions were
1) opportunities + challenges of globalization
2) what is the political and economical system in china
3) how does globalization affect china's economy
Started off rocky because it was still awkward between us and i failed to read my acad reader but it ended on a pretty good note! Headed off to east coast park after that for orientation games. Played save me mummy + scissors, paper, stone + firewall & captain's ball and we won all our games so overall we came in as the winning group with 617 which was amazing considering the second group got 473 (': glad that they managed to bond so much
Got two bottles of drinks as our prize and then they had a final water bomb fight which i managed to stay out of with hehe. Had our debrief after that and the day ended at 1830.
Day 2
I was the lone facil the whole day because sharif abandoned me. Reached vs at 0730 and then went to get breakfast because i was hungry ): then had our prep talk before the delegates started coming! Started with a documentary on the arab spring which wasn't as informative but it was pretty sad ): mum's losing their children and never seeing them again...heartbreak. Had cluster discussion after that which was based on terrorism! On how terrorist get their funding and if there are possible ways to prevent them from continuing their acts. Played two truths one lie with the group during free time before lunch and they are so zi-high, love em.
Had our expert lecture on macdonalisation by mr chu after that followed by a short preview on food inc! Had been wanting to watch since it came out two years ago (?) and oprah recommended everyone watch it (yes i watched oprah, shhh). Our next expert lecture was by prof bilveer singh on terrorism in the middle-east and asia and he's crazy hilarious. Most entertaining lecture throughout the entired convention. Shall buy his book when it's out and since he said we should watch the national day rally tmrw, i shall (:
We continued watching food inc for another hour till we got sian and then we were dismissed! Mr chua had left a message for vanessa to read for us and well...(': day ended at 1820
Day 3
We were told to come at 0815 but my dad had to head off to work so he dropped me off at vs at 0730. Had breakfast in the canteen awkwardly surrounded by vs boys (thank goodness kimberly was there with me) and then we headed to the av room for prep talk blahblah.
Started with the world trade game which was a whole lot of intellectual fun :D i swear gyf turns you into a total geek and you'll suddenly be really interested in political nansense. Yes, nansense. We were lucky enough to be singapore in the game and we came in second at the end of the game with $18800. Once again another proud moment of group 3 (':
Had our forum prep talk and preparation time after lunch and we were given the topic of terrorism and with the help of our designated tcad member shihui we managed to do quite a bit of research during the 15 minutes! We then had an expert lecture by associate professor li ming jiang on the south china sea dispute and i almost fell asleep because he had such a lullabic voice. Okay yes i made that word up and i'm kidding, he just wasn't boom-exciting and i was tired.
Headed to gardens by the bay after that to do our cluster discussion and just to explore the place for a while! It was pretty hot when we first arrived but then progressively dark clouds started rolling in so it was pretty windy (: the third question for our cluster discussion involved us asking tourist around how they felt about the place but instead i brought my group to texas chicken to buy drinks hehe. Was switching between american, british, malay and super singlish accents to amuse them and it worked muahaha. Then we ran back and pretended we did our work.
Took group photos and we were dismissed from there! Day ended close to 1900.
Day 4
Today started at the unholy early half of the seven o' clock hour. Gathered at 0715 at the canteen and started prepping the slides for our forum discussion presentation coz i didn't know there was still prep time later on ): was a retard and wore my uniform there only to change an hour later into my blazer skirt and white shirt.
Started the day with not doing much for quite a long time because there were technical errors but then ended up in the av room and did our forum discussion preparation and then we were the second group to present, the last before lunch and then we headed for lunch! Helped pack up the av room and moved the banners over to the audi with lyndon and clemence and then ended up being later after lunch :P
Continued with the forum discussion presentations after that in the audi! Was pretty thankful that we presented in the av room because everyone changed into formal wear during lunch and in the audi you have to present on stage and people bombard you with way more questions (: had a break and then badar and i headed downstairs to feed the koi and cat fish in the vs pond (which is humongous) then headed back up for the expert lecture on the eurozone debt crisis by dr yeo
Once again i fell asleep during a lecture (i'm sorry) but the audi is super confortable, how do you not fall asleep?! Then we had a long break so went down and bought two cups of coffee (one hot, one cold latte) so that i wouldn't sleep and so i'd be hyped up and went to feed the fish again with badar with bread this time! :D it's rather therapeautic watching the fishes suck the food in and the itty bitty fishes attack it like their sperm and the food pellet/bread ball (hurhur) is the egg.
Like i'm not even kidding, it's such an accurate real life depiction. DAMN ANTS ON MY TABLE NOW. I'LL THROW YOU ALL TO FEED KOI FISHES.
Closing ceremony started at around four thirty with bg ishak as our guest of honor. His key-note address was on globalisation & youth and it was based on the youth olympic games two years back, rather interesting, gave us all a sense of national and self pride. His closing speech was also rather inspirational, he gave us a lot of hope and assured us that the youths of today are prepared for what lays ahead in the future.
Then when the delegates were released school by school i ran out to take a group photo with them. Have yet to upload and toycamera-analog the better shots so all my photos will be on facebook probably only by tomorrow night. Let me insert instagram photos now then since my ipad was taken as hostage by crystal, rachel, clemence, badar and etc;
Had dinner with some of the other sot members at parkway parade after a looong camwhoring session in the auditorium. We bought our own food and then ate on the ulu platform at the seventh floor and some other sot members joined us just to take photos after that! Walked out and saw more sot members and gave them all hugs and air-kisses before qiao xin and badar walked me to my bus stop (':
